Life on Leeside - The Greg O'Halloran Column

It's been a turbulent few weeks and Jim McCarthy came in and talked to us about the wages situation and said they were trying to get things sorted. As has been publicly revealed, we got 40% of our month’s wages a couple of days ago, so I don’t know. I’m just waiting for the rest of it now. I didn’t talk to Stephen McGuinness but I’m sure Joe Gamble, as the player’s spokesman, and Danny Murphy will talk to him, so we’ll probably know pretty soon what’s happening.

There was 3,500 or so crowd for the Rovers game so hopefully we’ll get a good gate off it. But the most important thing was to get three points and we only came away with a point. It’s another clean sheet and fair play to the crowd who did make it out on Tuesday.

I have been moved sideways in the defence from centre half to right back, but I don’t mind playing right back, really. To be fair to Kevin (Long), he’s done excellent since he’s come in. The scouts in attendance must have been impressed. He reminds me of Damien Delaney in that he made the breakthrough into the team when he was 18-19 and he’s a big lad, six foot three, and good in the air so I wouldn’t be surprised to see him going over to England.

It was a bit weird watching Pat Sullivan in a Rovers jersey having played with him up until recently, but Pat’s a good lad, he’s given good service to Cork City and is a big loss to the club. He can’t be blamed for leaving, given that he’s from Dublin and has the option to play for Shamrock Rovers. You can’t fault him.

As you would expect, it’s disappointing to see team-mates depart; you always want to keep your best players at the club. You have Pat, who is probably the best right full in the League, Colin (Healy), and Denis (Behan). Hopefully Joe Gamble will stay because Joe has been Mr. Cork City over the last few seasons and been excellent for us this year. Hopefully the lads will stay together and hopefully the club will get sorted because it’s a fantastic club.

You see the atmosphere that was in the ground for last night’s game, you won’t get that in any other ground in this league. It’s just a pity now that there’s not a home game for another couple of weeks. Realistically, we’re all fighting for our future’s here. The scouts that were at the game could well have been looking at more than just Kevin.

When you see that Denis started for Hartlepool the last day and Colin started in the Carling Cup for Ipswich, then you begin to realise that there’s not much of a difference in the standards. This is a decent league with decent players.

Maybe they don’t view this league as being a good league but I feel there were players in both those dressing rooms last night, Shamrock Rovers and Cork City, who are well good enough to go over and do a job in the Football League if asked and you never know what’s going to happen.
