Roy O'Donovan becomes Robbie Fowler's first signing at Brisbane Roar

Newly-appointed Brisbane Roar coach Robbie Fowler has made Corkman Roy O’Donovan his first signing ahead of the 2019/202 Hyundai A-League season.

O’Donovan, who was capped by Ireland up to under-21 level, has spent the past five years in Australia with Central Coast Mariners and Newcastle Jets.

The 33-year-old has previously played for Cork City, Sunderland, Blackpool, Coventry and Hibernian before making the move down under in 2014.

The striker has scored 114 career goals and shows no sign of retiring soon after penning a deal with the Queensland club., who finished ninth in the ten-team A-League last season.

“I’m delighted to be given the opportunity to sign for Brisbane Roar,” O’Donovan told Brisbane Roar’s official website.

“It’s an exciting time to be joining the club and the chance to work with Premier League legend Robbie Fowler was a big factor in my decision.

“Brisbane is a big [Hyundai] A-League club and I’m looking forward to challenging the top teams next season and help to bring back the success that Brisbane have had in the past.

“I want to thank the Newcastle Jets and all of the fans there for their fantastic support and wish them all the best for next season.”

O’Donovan is one of four new signings unveiled by the Liverpool legend, who was appointed to the role in April.

Fowler added: “I’m very happy that we have secured Roy for the next two seasons. Getting a quality striker with a proven track record in the [Hyundai] A-League was a key position for us to fill.

“I was impressed with what I’ve seen of Roy so far and genuinely feel that there is plenty more to come from him and look forward to his contribution as a goal scorer and an experienced member of the squad.”
