Graham Carey signs for CSKA Sofia from Plymouth

Former Ireland U21 international Graham Carey has signed for Bulgarian side CSKA Sofia after leaving Plymouth Argyle.

Plymouth today announced Carey’s decision to reject an improved offer with the club and to move on to another challenge.

Carey had made 197 appearances for Argyle, who were last season relegated to League Two. The 30-year-old scored 49 goals for the club and won the Pilgrims’ Player of the Year award twice.

He now joins the likes of former Celtic striker Tony Watt at CSKA Sofia, where he has signed a two year deal with the 31 time Bulgarian champions.

Last season saw CSKA finish second in the league to Ludogorets and reach the semi-final of the Bulgarian Cup.

In Europe, the club reached the third qualifying round of the Europa League, losing out 4-2 on aggregate to Copenhagen after beating Latvian side Riga and Austrian side Admira in the previous rounds.

Carey began his career at Celtic and during his time at the club, had loan spells with Bohemians, St Mirren and Huddersfield Town.

Carey joined St Mirren permanently in 2011 before later signing for Ross County in 2013. He spent two seasons with The Staggies before his move to Plymouth.
