Mervue Utd will hope to end a sequence of six consecutive defeats when they host second placed Waterford Utd at Terryland Park on Saturday evening at the earlier kick-off time of 7 p.m.

Mervue manager Johnny Glynn will be hoping his side can take something from this game as he was very pleased with his side’s performance last week against UCD despite losing 1-0. He was most pleased with his defence which had leaked 21 goals in the five previous games and last week’s game was a significant improvement on recent performances.

On this weekend’s challenge Glynn has no doubt on how tough it will be to get a result against a side he feels are one of the strongest in the First Division. “Waterford United were the strongest team we have played to date and will present a difficult challenge on Saturday night, I expect them to fight it out with Shels and UCD right to the end. They have a stronger squad than the other two so have a real chance”.

Waterford Utd got their promotion push right back on track over the last week with two wins which has seen them moved back into second spot two points behind Shelbourne. A 2-1 win over Limerick FC was followed up with a comfortable 4-0 win over Finn Harps in mid-week so they will travel west in a confident mood to collect a further win and vital three points.

Blues boss Stephen Henderson was delighted with his side’s performances particularly against Finn Harps, as they overcame the driving wind and rain, as well as their dogged opponents, to produce some exciting, impressive football.

Waterford hosted a depleted Mervue side for the first ever meeting of the two sides back in early May and ran out 2-0 winners thanks to two second half strikes from Joe Mulcahy and Willie John Kiely. Blues boss has a couple of injuries to concern himself with as striker Willie John Kiely and midfielder Joe Mulcahy are both rated doubtful with dead legs, with the forward the less likely of the pair to feature, and midfielder Paul McCarthy is struggling with an on-going groin injury.

Glynn will once again be without the services of Mark Ludden, Noel McDonnell, Rynal Brown and David O’Dowd all through injuries. He may however add new signings Paul Danaher, who has signed from Limerick FC and Neill Keane to his squad while Kenny Farrell, Rory Gaffney, Pat Hoban, Kevin Crehan, Martin Conneely and Evan Connolly all came through the club’s mid-week under 20’s 4-0 win over Castlebar Celtic. There are no suspensions to worry about for either side.

Mervue will be hoping to stop the recent slid and finally put some points on the board again while Waterford will fancy their chances of leaving the Dyke Road venue will all three vital points in their continued promotion push.
