Katie McCarthy named WNL Player of the Month for April

The Só Hotels Women’s National League Player of the Month for April has been awarded to experienced Cork City midfielder Katie McCarthy.

McCarthy received the award at a function in the Charleville Park Hotel, which was attended by the hotel’s Business Development Manager Monica Gilmore.

The Ballinhassig native scored four goals during April for Cork City, who collected impressive league victories over DLR Waves and Limerick, although they did exit the League Cup to Shelbourne.

A student teacher who recently reached a century of appearances for the Rebels, Katie faced stiff competition for the Player of the Month award from Peamount United’s Eleanor Ryan Doyle and Galway’s Sinead Donovan.  

Ryan Doyle starred for Peamount during the Dublin’s side unbeaten run during April, scoring against DLR Waves in the league leaders’ third win of the month, achieved without conceding a single goal.

Sinead Donovan’s promptings from midfield were critical to Galway’s battling away draw against Shelbourne and an impressive home win over DLR Waves.

28-year-old McCarthy reached 100 of games for the Leesiders on May 5 in her side’s league loss to Shelbourne.

Speaking after receiving her Player of the Month gong, McCarthy described the team ethic that has underpinned her side’s 2019 performances.

“I think I had a good month personally, but then collectively, we had a really good month. We had good performances and some really good results in the month of April. We’ve quite a young squad so it’s taking a bit of time getting a bit of experience, but I think things are looking really positive.”

The former DLR Waves and Wexford Youths star went to assert that she can foresee the fortunes of Cork City Women’s FC continuing to advance as she and he colleagues play more games to get more familiar with each other’s play.

“We’re looking forward to keeping on improving – we’re getting better all the time as a squad and as a group of players, so I’m really enjoying it at the moment. I’m really happy to have won the award, I’m quite proud actually.”
