Athlone Town -v- Shelbourne

Shelbourne travel to Lissywoollen on Saturday evening to take on Brendan Place’s Athlone Town in this FAI League of Ireland First Division game (Kick-off 7.45pm).

Shelbourne have now gone undefeated since losing to Sporting Fingal on April 17th. This run has seen the Reds move to the top of the league table. Currently they sit one point ahead of UCD, but Shels have two games in hand over the Students.

Shelbourne, who played Millwall during the week, going down 1-0 to an unfortunate own goal, came through that game without injury, partly due to Dermot Keely’s judicious use of first team players in that game, will however be without the centre back pairing of Alan Keely (hip) and Kevin Doherty (calf) due to injuries incurred in training.

On the plus side, clearance for Michael Synnott (on loan from Dundalk) should be through in time for him to play a part in the fixture. The club have also announced that ‘Franco’ Georgescu has left the club.

Athlone manager Brendan Place will be looking for a dramatically improved performance from his charges after Tuesday night’s performance in the 5-2 reversal against rivals Longford Town. Place has an injury crisis that just won’t go away with Tom O’Halloran, Kevin Horan, Kevin Williamson, Mick Byrne all definitely unavailable through injury while Robbie Benson is unavailable due to a pre booked holiday. Noel McGee who has come on a sub in the last two fixtures is still struggling with a persistent hamstring strain and he will again undergo a late fitness test.

Extratime.ie Prediction: 3-1 to Shelbourne
