Former Ipswich Town and Waterford midfielder Jack Doherty signs for Wexford
Wexford have announced the signing of former Ipswich Town and Waterford United midfielder Jack Doherty.
Doherty signs for Brian O’Sullivan’s side having recently returned from a short spell in the United States.
The 24-year-old began his career with Carrick before moving to League of Ireland side Waterford United.
Doherty signed a two-year deal with Mick McCarthy’s Ipswich in 2013 following a trial but was loaned back to Waterford in 2014.
He scored twice in 16 league appearances for Waterford before moving to Limerick for the second half of the season after his contract at Ipswich expired.
The midfielder made just six appearances for Martin Russell’s side as injury ruled him out for the remainder of the season.
The 2015 season saw Doherty play again for Waterford and in the second half of the season, for Longford Town.
He had another spell at Carrick in 2016, before going to the United States and now says he is looking to help Wexford finish as high up the First Division table as possible.
“I've played a few times at Ferrycarrig Park before against Wexford Youths and I played with David (Breen, Wexford FC first team Coach) when I was at Waterford so I'm delighted to get back playing at this level,” Doherty told the club’s official website.
“I hope I can bring something to the team that helps us win games, thats what it's all about, getting three points and try get us as high up the table as we can.
“It would be nice to challenge for things, even Cups, knocking one or two of the bigger boys out.
“Right now though we're just focussed on that first game of the season, it would be nice to get off to a good start against Athlone,” Doherty said.
