Somerville impressed with keeper Kelly
Even though Kildare County came away from their game on Sunday with their first clean sheet since last September, Director Of Football Joey Somerville was less than happy with some of their defending during the game.
“I didn’t think our defence played well, I though they caused us more problems in the second half than Limerick did to be honest with you. Anything that they created, we handed them, we were sloppy, every option we took was the wrong one, we passed it to Limerick more times that they passed to each other”, Somerville told extratime.ie after the game.
“It’s a point, I think they are sitting fifth in the table so it was good to come away with a point but certainly we have more to offer than we did. I don’t know if was a case that it was a bit too soon after the game on Friday night for some of them, the pitch was a bit heavy after the rain so it might have been a bit too much for some of them.”
Much of the post-match talk after Kildare County’s 0-0 draw with Limerick at Station Road on Sunday surrounded the performance of Darren Kelly, who had a superb game between the sticks. This was something that Somerville was in complete agreement about, and he was full of praise for Kelly’s performance on the night.
“I’m very pleased for Darren Kelly that he kept a clean sheet because he deserves it, he made a great save in the first half from a free kick that took a deflection, he came out off his line well and punched a couple of corner kicks clear too. The back four in front of him are a bit more relaxed now because they now if they have a bit of a hiccup they have Kellyer in behind them. He did very well but I thought in most other areas, we were mediocre at best”, said Somerville.
Though he was unhappy about a number of aspects of the team’s performances, Somerville did acknowledge the way that his players dug in when they were being put under pressure by Pat Scully’s side.
“For a change, we dug in and we scrapped and we didn’t buckle under the pressure which we would have done a few weeks ago and we would have lost it late. As bad as we were in the second half, and it was a case of us being bad not them being good, I didn’t feel like we were going to lose it whereas in the past I’ve been really worried in the last five minutes because even when they got a couple of scrappy chances we had people throwing themselves in the way trying to get blocks on it”.
“At the end of the day, we are pleased that despite not playing as well we could have, we came away with a point which makes a change to other weeks”, added Somerville.
