Deegan confident ahead of Red Bull test
Speaking to extratime.ie today, on the back of a fine win against Derry City on Sunday, Bohemians’ midfielder Gary Deegan was confident he could help his side come out on top of their European tie against Red Bull Salzburg on Wednesday night.
“It was a great result (against Derry), especially after having to come back on Wednesday. A big result,” said Deegan. “We hadn’t beaten them this year. I think they were tired from playing midweek and the travelling they had done.”
Derry were undone by a tireless performance from Bohs at Dalymount, with Deegan and Paul Keegan running the midfield from start to finish.
“Me and Paul are doing well. I’m trying to play a lot more forward, that’s my game. Paul sticks to what he does and I stick to what I’m good at. I think the way we play; we understand each other quite well.”
Asked what his side had seen of Salzburg before last weeks magnificent draw in Austria, Deegan admitted they didn’t know too much about Wednesday’s visitors.
“We watched bits but a lot of their players didn’t play. We watched a testimonial game but we didn’t really see much. We’ll feel them out. In the first ten minutes if we stay solid and keep the ball I think we’ll be okay.”
“They’re a decent side. I don’t think we can underestimate them at all. We have a job we need to do and hopefully we can do it,” he added.
The winners of Wednesday’s tie will play either Pyunik Yerevan (Armenia) or Dinamo Zagreb (Croatia) in the next qualifying round. With a Champions League spot at grabs, a huge crowd is expected at Dalymount, with the Jodi Stand all ready sold out and the Des Kelly stand almost full also.
