Boost for Dundalk as midfielder Robbie Benson re-signs
Despite not having a manager in place, Dundalk have continued their preparations for 2019 with the re-signing of midfielder Robbie Benson.
Benson, who is beginning his third season as a Lillywhite spoke of his content to get the deal done early and continue his training ahead of the new Premier Division campaign.
“I am very happy to get it all done. It was just a matter of dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s. We’re back in now to do a little bit of training and check our body fats, it’s the first time since I’ve been here that we have been in before Christmas which is great,” Benson old dundalkfc.com.
The former UCD man also reflected on what was a successful 2018 for all at Oriel Park and while he understands it will be difficult, he is hopeful that the Louth outfit can repeat their league and cup double in their forthcoming campaign.
“We had a great season last year and we managed to get the title back and win the FAI Cup as well which was a great way to end the season so it was a good one for us.
“You don’t win a league and Cup double too often. Some of the lads who have been around in 2015 achieved it before and this was my first time doing it so it was great for me and for all of us. The players that are here and the style of football that we play will hopefully ensure that kind of success will continue.”
Benson follows the likes of Dane Massey and Daniel Cleary who have also penned new deals in recent times and with the majority of the rest of the 2018 squad staying at Oriel Park for 2019, Benson has every right to be confident heading into the new year.
