Megan Smyth-Lynch fires Peamount United to WNL Cup glory in Wexford

Megan Smyth-Lynch's late goal fired Peamount United to their first piece of silverware in five years as they lifted the Women's National League Cup with a 2-1 win over Wexford Youths.

The Peas had to do it the hard way after Lauren Dwyer had given the champions a slender half-time lead, but Áine O'Gorman levelled after the break before Smyth-Lynch scored the winner.

Defender Dwyer put Wexford - who had been given home advantage for the tie - the lead as she squeezed a header from Emma Hansberry's cross inside the post.

It was a lead Youths took into the break but they were pegged back just three minutes after the break when 100-times-capped international O'Gorman restored parity.

Amber Barrett picked out her Ireland teammate and O'Gorman sent a looping shot towards goal that Ciamh Dollard couldn't keep out.

And the turnaround was complete eight minutes from time as Smyth-Lynch charged down a Wexford clearance and the loose ball flew into the net.

It's the first time Peamount had won a senior trophy since 2013, when they won the same competition with a 6-3 win over Castlebar Celtic.
