Bohemians post-match reaction
Speaking to the media after his side's one all draw against Austrian champions Red Bull Salzburg in the Red Bull Arena on Wednesday night, Bohemians manager Pat Fenlon was quick to heap praise on his goalkeeper Brian Murphy. The Waterford native pulled off a string of fine saves including a stunning penalty kick stop from Salzburg's star striker Marc Janko.
According to Fenlon: "I have said for a long time that Brian is a quality keeper. I have gone on about it before in terms of the recognition he should get and again last night he showed that his skills as a goalkeeper are first class, his kicking and his distribution especially.
"We have said it many times that he’s as good as any keeper around and he just keeps producing performances like that. You need a good keeper in Europe and thankfully we have that. The tie is won over two legs and we have done well here, but now it’s all about going through. To go out at Dalymount would be very disappointing, having come here and got a result, but I think we are good enough to go through. If we are to go through we’ll need the level of performance we had last night, and a bit of luck along the way, but we’re looking forward to the second leg," Fenlon added.
The Gypsies fell behind on 25 minutes when defender Milan Dudic was allowed far too much space inside the six yard box and directed a powerful header past the helpless Murphy. However, after Murphy had saved Janko's penalty on 57 minutes, Jospeh Ndo pounced on the hour mark to grab a crucial away goal for Bohs and ensure that the two sides have it all to play for in the return leg at Dalymount Park.
“We’re happy to get a draw away from home in Europe, we were under a lot of pressure in the second half and we found it very tough. Now the element of surprise is gone from our point of view, but we’re pleased to have the away goal. I would like to see the penalty again but in the heat of the moment I thought their player leaned into Ken Oman and he went over fairly easy. It was given so there’s not a lot we can do about it, and it was a first class save from Murph as the lad hit it well, it was disappointing to have it given against us but we got away with it with the save and to score so quickly after was a bonus."
Red Bull Salzburg manager Huub Stevens said he was disappointed by his side's failue to take their chances in front of goal. He said: "Of course I am disappointed. We surrendered our control of the match and didn’t use the chances we had available. The result can just about be explained but I said before the match that this tie will be decided in Dublin and I stick by that."
