Dundalk FC have announced the signing of Scottish left-sided player Kevin McKinlay. The 23-year-old becomes manager Sean Connor’s second signing of the July transfer window after goalkeeper Peter Cherrie’s move to Oriel Park last week.

McKinlay, who can play in either defence or midfield, has already appeared at the border venue when he played in last month’s friendly win over Lisburn Distillery, after a mutual parting following a contract talks breakdown resulted in him being released by Partick Thistle, where he had spent the last two seasons. He previously played for Ross County for four years after coming out of the Chelsea youth system.

“I’m delighted to be here,” McKinlay told dundalkfc.com shortly after putting pen to paper. “It’s obviously a big change of scenery, but I’m just happy to get over here and back playing football, so I hope everything goes well. It’s a lovely country and there’s good facilities here, so hopefully I’ll just get my head down now and get on with my football, and see what happens from there.

“I've only seen the Bohemians game, last Friday, and I was impressed with the boys,” he added. “Bohemians are top of the league but we’ve got them in the cup so hopefully we can do something and beat them then. The fans looked great and I’ve been talking to some of them on the street, it’s a really nice town so I’m just glad to be here and get settled in. It is different (to Partick) but the club is looking to move forward here.

“I spoke to the manager and Joe (Miller) and they said they’re looking to take the club forward, so hopefully I’ll be part of that in the future,” Kevin concluded. “I played with Chris Turner at Partick so that was the contact and then I spoke to Sean and Joe. They took me over to play against Lisburn Distillery and I impressed, they said they wanted to sign me so I said yeah. I think there’s five Scottish players in the team, it’s just like the Scottish standard as well, so they must like over here - that’s why they’re coming over.”
