Somerville pleased with Kildare's performance

After their defeat to UCD on Saturday, thanks to a late Chris Mulhall goal, Director of Football Joey Somerville was clearly disappointed. However, he was pleased with the performance from his players against a team that are well on course in their quest to gain promotion back to the top-flight.

"We definitely didn’t deserve that. It [the winning goal] started with Dean Barrett giving back the ball to them that time when it was our ball. We had it, and for some reason only known to the referee, he insisted that we give it back to them rather than the other way around and Deano was naive enough to do it, rather than walking away and refusing to do it. From the time we gave it back to them we didn’t recover properly from it", Somerville told extratime.ie after the game. .

"Then young Craigy [Craig Purcell], he had such a blinding game up to that, he just dwelled on it a little bit too long and fell over it. I mean, even the finish was scabby, it was a toe-poke when we were getting back around him. If he had taken another yard out of it, we might have gotten back to it. But, it’s two of the top three we’ve played in the last two games and been as good if not better than both of them, but it’s still no good because we still have no points on the board. I mean it’s okay competing and being competitive and creating chances for that length of time, but you have to take them".

The final moments of the game saw Orrin Farrell being sent-off, which isn’t something that Somerville agreed with it, and he confirmed that they will be appealing the dismissal. .

"It’s never a straight red. That’s the thing about it. The bloke’s standing with the ball on the corner flag and he’s going to be challenged. You can’t just stand off; you have to make a challenge. It’s not a straight red, but we’ll be appealing Orrin red card. We won’t accept that".

Of further concern to Somerville was an injury to Cathal Brady, which saw the attacker raced off to hospital with a cast around his leg. .

"We don’t know how bad it is [the injury]. He was doing well at that particular moment; he was popping up in that little area in between the centre-half and the midfield. He was driving at them, he was causing them problems. Then the challenge that came in on him, I don’t think there was anything malicious in the challenge, it was a slight bit late. It probably should have been a free-kick as opposed to a throw-in but there was nothing malicious in it, I think it was just the way he landed, the way he jumped when he rode the challenge", added Somerville. .
