Joe Hart left out as England reveal 23-man World Cup squad

England manager Gareth Southgate has announced his 23-man squad for the World Cup in Russia with Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart the most notable omission.

Hart played in nine of England's ten qualifying games as they easily topped a Group F containing Scotland, Slovakia and Slovenia.

The 31-year-old was left out of the final game, a 1-0 win over Lithuania, but was widely expected to at least retain his squad place for the finals.

Stoke City's Jack Butland, who started that final game, has been selected alongside Jordan Pickford of Everton and uncapped Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope between the sticks.

Three members of the Premier League-winning Manchester City defence – Fabian Delph, John Stones and Kyle Walker – have been selected along with Liverpool youngster Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Jack Wilshere has been omitted in midfield in spite of earning his place back in the Arsenal starting 11, while ex-Ireland under-21 defender Michael Keane of Everton is also left out.

Once-capped Bournemouth midfielder Lewis Cook is on the standby list should injury force changes in the main 23, as is Burnley defender James Tarkowski.
