Somerville calls on Kildare people's support
Despite suffering another defeat at the hands of Sporting Fingal in the Morton Stadium on Friday night, there were many positives for Joey Somerville to take from the match. However, he did have a few choice words for the Kildare public when he spoke to extratime.ie after the game, who he feels should come out and support his players more often than they currently do.
"That’s where we’ll be [further up the league table]. We’ll be there. I was talking to Killian earlier on in KFM, and he said ‘the Kildare public, I’m sure they’re sick of hearing the same old rhetoric out of you’. I mean, come out and watch a f-----g game, and if you’re not happy with the likes of that performance, then no problem, I’ll sit down and have a cup of tea with anybody who’ll argue the toss about it. But don’t give me this crap about not happy with this or the Kildare public that", urged Somerville.
"Come down and watch us, we’re only down the bleeding road from them. It’s very simple. We’ve got a lot of quality here, we’ve got fellas who are playing for this club for nothing, and they’re playing because they want to prove themselves. We need people to come out and watch games, we need people to support them. If at the end of the season, anybody can turn around and say ‘them lads didn’t want to play for the cause’, then I’ll argue the toss with them, no problem. We’re a different side now than we were six or eight weeks ago".
Certainly, anyone who watched this particular match would be left with little doubt about the commitment and desire that this group of players possesses, and Somerville was extremely happy with what he saw against Sporting Fingal.
"We worked very, very hard, kept our shape, kept our discipline, only one time we fell asleep in the second period. We were getting tired at that stage. I’m very happy with 99 per cent of that performance, but that 1 per cent killed us", Somerville added.
