Limerick's Chiedozie Ogbene seals move to Championship Brentford

Brentford have completed the signing of Limerick forward Chiedozie Ogbene on a three-and-a-half-year deal.

The Nigerian-born star played almost every game for the Blues last, scoring on eight occasions in a side that struggled for large periods of the season.

The multi-talented Ogbene also played GAA for Nemo Rangers before committing fully to Cork City, for whom he made his debut appearance at the end of the 2015 season in a 1-0 victory over Bohemians.

Further success came in 2016 when he played for the City under-19s in their UEFA Youth League run, which culminated in a defeat over two legs to Italian giants AS Roma.

He made a further eight appearances for the senior team which included a goal scored against Shamrock Rovers and a substitute appearance in the FAI Cup final win over Dundalk.

Despite John Caulfield’s clear belief in Ogbene’s match-winning abilities, the player decided to move to neighbours Limerick where his increased playing time contributed to him orchestrating a move to the EFL Championship.

“We have been monitoring Chiedozie for quite a while and we like what he can bring,” Brentford head coach Dean Smith told the club's website.

“He came over to train with us and we could see that his personality and character ticked all the boxes for us. We are looking forward to working with him and seeing how he develops.”

Ogbene added on Twitter: “Huge thanks to the players, coaches, managers and all those involved that I have worked with at both Limerick FC and Cork City FC in helping making me what I am today.

“I have learnt that our future is as bright as our faith and to always remain positive! I look forward to my new chapter at Brentford.”
