Waterford United sign Dave Warren
Waterford United have announced that they have completed the signing of Dave Warren.
The 28 year old midfielder was a key member of the Blues squad up to the end of last year, having first joined Waterford United in 2007, but parted company with the club at the end of his contract in the close season. Initially signed as a front man / wide midfielder, he soon made the centre midfield berth his own, and put in a series of immense performances, driving his team on from the middle of the park. Strong, tough in the tackle, with a seemingly unlimited engine, an eye for goal, and an ice-cool temperament from the penalty spot, Dave’s return is a huge boost to the United squad as they are still fighting for honours on all fronts, adding strength in depth to the midfield, and boosting competition for places. The deal signs him up until the end of this season, and it is expected that he will not be the only new face brought in over the coming weeks.
Born in Cork, he started his career at Mayfield United, and it was with the Cork club that he was drafted into the Republic of Ireland under-age set-up, being part of the squad that won the UEFA U-16 European Championship under Brian Kerr in 1998. He spent two seasons at Wrexham before returning home to Cork City in 2002, and from there went on loan and then permanently to Cobh Ramblers. Primarily a striker at Cobh, he set a remarkable record in 2004, scoring a double hat-trick in an 8-1 demolition of Monaghan United, only the fourth player to do so in league history [after Jonathan Speak (Derry), Brendan Bradley (Finn Harps) and Jimmy Munroe (Cork)]. He first signed for United at the start of the 2007 season.
