Somerville frustrated over "ineligible" players

Kildare County Director of Football, Joey Somerville, was once again left frustrated after his side suffered yet another narrow league defeat, this time against Longford Town last Friday. However, when he spoke to extratime.ie after the game most of his frustrations were directed at the decision by the League to declare four of his new signings, including goalkeeper Darren Kelly, ineligible to play.

"We found out [that Kelly couldn’t play] at half past three today. The league, in their wisdom, three players, we had to change the side three times after three different phone calls from the league. It’s a joke, it’s a f-----g joke. They’re telling us that although his league [with Crumlin United] is finished, that technically he’s still playing. Dean Barrett left Bluebell in January, has trained with us for months now, waiting for the 31st of May, for to be told on the 31st of May that you cannot play because a team, that you haven’t been with for six months, are still in a Cup competition", Somerville explained.

"It’s a joke, and then David Jackson, we registered four letters, sent in four letters, they signed for four letters, then they claimed that they didn’t get Jackson’s [signature], so they asked us to re-fax it with a copy of the receipt. So we re-faxed it, with a copy of the receipt, and then they ring us and say, on the receipt you don’t stipulate which one of the four is Jackson’s. They say ‘we can’t accept it because we don’t know which one is his’. It’s mind-blowing and it wouldn’t surprise me at all, to find that this is the kind of thing that is going on because it’s us".

On the game itself, Somerville once again was disappointed by the goals that were conceded.

"I can’t sum it up to be honest with you because again the three goals were so soft. It’s ridiculous, it really is ridiculous. Nothing can describe it, I mean the first was a bad enough one defensively, but the second and third goals, it’s mind-blowing. They’re working so hard and then we get back in the game after being 2-1 down and going down to ten men".

"Dave O’Riordan was excellent again tonight to be fair to him. The likes of him, Philly Hughes worked his socks off. The boys in midfield, the two full-backs as well, Christy Doran was superb. They don’t deserve that to happen to them, and for him [Kevin McDonnell] to cost us like that. I can’t describe it, no words can describe it. It’s frustrating, soul-destroying even", concluded Somerville.
