Byrne continues to shine
Jason Byrne’s 56th minute header was enough to put Bohemians back to the top of the Premier Division on Friday night. His 12th goal of the season gave the Phibsborough outfit a 1-0 over the in-form Cork City at Turner’s Cross, putting the Leesiders magnificent defensive run to an end.
After the game, Byrne told extratime.ie: “Obviously, coming down here was a massive game and a six-pointer at the top of the table. I thought we done well tonight, I thought we fought well and we deserved to win it.”
Byrne’s goal was his third header so far this campaign and his 12th goal in total. It’s an impressive tally to say the least, and the lone striker on Friday night was delighted to be back to his best. “It’s going alright. Last year was a bit disappointing how it went, but this year I’m fitter than I’ve ever been and the goals are flying in for me and long may it continue,” he said.
He was also keen to praise the vocal Bohs’ support which travelled south to witness their team return to the summit. “They were great. I have to say though; I just wish they could be singing like that every week. They’ve been left disappointed but they were fantastic down here tonight, like a 12th man.”
Bohs’ have been far from impressive the past couple of weeks, losing away to Derry City and Shamrock Rovers but the win was a massive boost of confidence for the current champions. “It’s been well documented that we haven’t been firing on all cylinders the way we know we have been. We were on a blip but we showed our quality tonight and we came away with the three points,” Byrne concluded.
