Waterford United have the opportunity to stretch their lead in the First Division tonight as they take on Wexford Youths in the RSC (Kick-off 19:00).

Last weekend's 4-1 victory at Sporting Fingal lifted the Blues to the number one spot for the first time in 2009, after UCD could only manage a draw at Jackman Park. It was the ninth game in a unbeaten League run. At the back, the Blues boast the meanest defence in the league, with only five condeded in twelve league matches thus far. And in attack United are second to Fingal as the league's top scoring side, and their regular front two of Willie John Kiely and Graham Cummins head up the divisional goalscoring charts.

Blues manager Stephen Henderson is seriously impressed with his players and their never say die attitude however he was quick to point out its still early days in the league.

"Every one of the players are brilliant guys who have pride in that blue shirt. Their work rate is unbelieveable, and they just don't know when they are beaten."

"Our form of late has been fantastic but we have to remember it is early days still. It is important that we don’t get carried away with ourselves because we have achieved nothing yet."

Seamus Long will miss out through suspension for Waterford and according to the club there are no injury worries however on a quick look back over Waterford team bulletins, they never seem to have injuries.

Wexford Youths manager Wallace has doubts over top goal scorer Gavin Doyle and he will be hoping that he comes through a fitness test. However, even if he does, it’s doubtful if he will start the game. This gives Wallace a bit of a problem in terms of the striking department with Danny Furlong, Paul Murphy and Jimmy Keohane also missing. This means that Gary Sheahan may get his first League start and also that a few of the U18 players may be drafted in. David Miller and Johnny Flynn O’Connor are also set to miss the game.

“We know how difficult a game this is going to be, Waterford are in fantastic form and have to be favourites to win the League” said Wallace

“ Waterford beat us at home earlier in the season by a single goal, but we felt we could have got something out of the game with a bit of luck. It’s a difficult game for us to have on the back of last weeks defeat and the fact that Waterford beat Sporting Fingal 4-1 just highlights that” Wallace said.

“We have a lot of injuries going into this game, so we’re clearly the underdogs. I may have to start some of the youngsters from the U18 squad on Saturday night” Wallace stated.

Extratime.ie Prediction: Waterford to win by three goals to nil.
