Mervue United -v- Limerick FC
Mervue Utd will be looking to consolidate their mid-table position when they entertain Limerick FC at Terryland Park with an early kick-off time of 7 p.m. Limerick will be hoping to secure another three points to propel them up into the top five in the First Division.
Mervue will be looking to improve their home record having only won one of their six homes to date while Limerick have won two of their five away games this season. Mervue had a good 2-2 draw away to Athlone Town last weekend despite missing six regulars as a late Mark Ludden header earned them a deserved point on the night. Limerick also earned a point with an excellent scoreless draw at home against high flying UCD last weekend.
Limerick have drawn three of their last four games while the home team have drawn two of their last three games but haven’t won in five either. Mervue manager Johnny Glynn was very pleased with his side’s performance last weekend “We earned a draw and I thought we played well overall apart for a 20 minute period. I thought we were the better team.
On Limerick Glynn commented, “Pat Scully has a reputation for building teams with a strong defence, and that certainly seems to be the case. Having spoken to both UCD and Wexford Youths managers recently, and they confirmed that to me. We are pleased with our own level of performance recently, and our displays are giving us huge encouragement. We were delighted with how we played against Athlone last Saturday considering we were down a few bodies, and if we show that kind of desire and commitment we can do well. We have played all the teams above us in the last few weeks, and while we haven’t taken too many points we have been competitive. It is important we approach this match with Limerick in the exact same way”
On his team’s game this weekend Pat Scully admitted, "It will be a tough match, they're new to the league and they've done exceptionally well so far. They started out a bit sluggishly, but over the last month or so they've started to get results. Terryland Park is a tough place to go and they're a big physical team so we know it will be a battle, but again I think we proved last Friday that we can play good football and be a match for anyone."
Glynn will welcome back Nicky Curran and David O’Dowd after they missed the Athlone game due to Mixie Harty’s wedding. He will though be without the services of Nigel Keady (knee), Ger McGrath (hamstring and back) and Noel McDonnell (groin) through injury. Scully will have to do so without the services of both Pat Purcell and John Tierney who both limped off against the Students with both Purcell and Tierney expected to miss the next four to five weeks through knee and hamstring injuries respectively.
Mervue’s never say die attitude has certainly stood them in good stead recently and Glynn will be hoping to get back to winning ways at home. “The mood in the camp is very good confirmed the manager “ I have to say we have a very good team spirit and that is a huge help preparing for these games”. Though with Limerick having only lost once in their last eight league games a difficult assignment awaits for Mervue and with both teams recent results a draw looks the most likely outcome.
