Tommy Stewart returns to Ireland with Dundalk
Dundalk have bolstered their attacking options with Northern Irishman Thomas Stewart having signed with the club.
With David McMillan set to miss the opening weeks of the season through injury, and forwards Ciaran (on loan at Finn Harps) and Michael O’Connor having left Oriel Park, manager Stephen Kenny was keen to add to his attacking options.
Stewart, a former Shamrock Rovers striker, joins the club having spent three years playing across the Atlantic with American side Sacramento Republic and Ottawa Fury of Canada.
The move also see the 30-year-old join up with his old manager, Kenny, whom he worked under at Derry City.
“I’ve worked well with Stephen before,” Stewart told dundalkfc.com shortly after his unveiling.
“He has worked with a lot of good players and he has helped a lot of players push on in their careers. He has been very successful.
“Obviously, I’ve been away for a few years now so it’s nice to get back. I’m very familiar with the manager, some of the players and the league, so I can’t wait to get going.”
Stewart has also represented Linfield and Partick Thistle in his career, although perhaps his most successful spell was at Rovers, Dundalk’s opponents in the opening round of SSE Airtricity League Premier Division, where he played 89 times across two spells, scoring 21 times.
He will travel with his new team mates to tonight’s President’s Cup Final in Cork but he’s not yet available for selection.
