Striker Michael Duffy joins Dundalk from Celtic

Dundalk have added a sixth new face to their squad this morning following the club’s confirmation that striker Michael Duffy has joined from Celtic.

The 22-year-old signs a two-year deal with the champions for a fee which has been undisclosed, where he will join former Derry City teammate Patrick McEleney in the attacking ranks.

Duffy failed to make a competitive first-team appearance for the Glasgow giants during his 23-month spell in Scotland after joining from Derry.

He spent time on loan at Alloa Athletic in the Scottish Championship last season before joining Paul Hartley’s Dundee on a season-long loan in the summer.

His spell at Dens Park failed to really get off the ground, despite being a regular name on the team sheet, and speculation had been growing about his move to Oriel Park, a transfer which hinged on Celtic re-calling him from his loan spell before last night’s deadline.

Thankfully for Stephen Kenny the transfer went through with the Northern Irish under-21 international set to fly out and meet his new colleagues at their pre-season camp in Spain today.

“I’m buzzing to join Dundalk,” Duffy told dundalkfc.com.

“I’m just happy now that it has finally got done. I enjoyed my two years in Scotland and have some good memories of it.

“I played in some big games and (although) it didn’t work out the way I wanted it to, I still enjoyed it.

“I’ve seen how well Stephen and Dundalk have been doing over the past few years. Speaking to him and listening to his plans with me, I really wanted to come here.

“I followed Dundalk and watched all their games in Europe and saw how well they were doing. They were very unlucky not to qualify from the group stages, so I’m hoping they can go on the same run again this year.

“Personally, I’m just hoping to get back to playing week in, week out and enjoying football again.

“I want to get back to scoring goals and have a good season, and hope that Dundalk have a successful season,” the forward concluded.
