Garry Comerford joins Waterford

Former Shamrock Rovers and Cobh Ramblers midfielder Garry Comerford is the latest player to join the set-up at Waterford in advance of the 2017 season.

The Blues will be one of the favourites for promotion this year and their squad strength now stands at 14 with the acquisition of the Laois native.

Comerford joined Cobh Ramblers from Avondale United midway through the 2016 campaign. He made 12 league appearances as Ramblers advanced to the promotion/relegation play-offs only to lose out to Drogheda.

It was Comerford’s second spell at St. Colman’s Park having previously played under then boss Martin Cambridge during the 2014 season. He played ten league games then and scored one goal.

New Waterford first team coach Alan Reynolds had this to say of his latest signing.

“We’re delighted to have Garry on board. He can play in a number of different positions and is left sided so that gives us plenty of options to work with. I think the Waterford public will like what they see. Garry was a big part of why Cobh had such a good end of season last year. He’s young and hungry with plenty to offer going forward at just 23 years old.”

Comerford, who played all his youth football at Shamrock Rovers, is relishing the latest opportunity he has been offered at the Waterford RSC.

“When Alan approached me this season and asked would I be interested in joining the club, there was only one answer from me. There is a great footballing history in the area and I’m hoping this could be the start of bringing Waterford FC back to where it belongs.”

Normally a central midfielder, whose only senior appearance for Rovers came in the Leinster Senior Cup, Comerford is enthusiastic about the new Waterford management structure.

“I love to learn more about the game every day and I think both Pat and Alan will bring the best out of me. They have a lot of experience both on the pitch in their playing days and as coaches so I’m hoping they can bring me onto the next level.”

Comerford is employed as a personal trainer and has also excelled at Gaelic Football.
