Gleeson resigns as UCD Waves boss

The three-year reign of Eileen Gleeson as Team Manager and Head Coach of UCD Waves is over. The former Ballymun United player announced her resignation today. Gleeson leaves the Women’s National League club that she managed to a runners-up position in the League two years ago.

The Waves also reached the 2014 FAI Women’s Cup final under Eileen’s stewardship at the Aviva Stadium against Raheny United. She was also in the dugout for the 2016 Women’s National League Cup decider at Richmond Park in which the south County Dublin outfit lost by the odd goal in five to Shelbourne.

Confirming the departure on the club’s Twitter account, UCD Waves stated, “Eileen Gleeson has informed UCD Waves that she is stepping down as manager. UCD Waves would like to thank Eileen for her dedication to the club over the past three seasons and wish her the very best.”

As a player, Gleeson represented Blacklions in the Civil Service League and wore the Ballymun United and Hammond Celtic colours in the Dublin Women's Soccer League.

Having cut her coaching teeth at Ballymun and later at St. James Gate, she began a hugely successful eight-year term as manager of Peamount United in 2006. Gleeson guided the Newcastle, Co. Dublin team to a memorable treble in 2010. The Dublin Women's Soccer League, the DWSL Premier Cup and the FAI Women's Cup trophies were all proudly displayed at the club’s Greenogue Ground.

Eileen Gleeson went on to manage the Peas during their inaugural Women’s National League win and through their historic odyssey to the knockout stages of the UEFA Women’s Champions League. There were also a number of domestic Cup successes.

Eileen holds a UEFA Pro Licence and a MSC in Coaching and Exercise Science from UCD.
