Russell to manage Limerick in 2017

Limerick have announced that Martin Russell will manage the Blues upon their return to Premier Division football in 2017.

Russell lead the Munster side to the 2016 SSE Airtricity League First Division, finishing 23 points ahead of nearest challengers Drogheda United.

The ex-UCD boss also lead Limerick to the 2016 EA Sports Cup final, only to be undone by Liam Buckley’s St Patrick’s Athletic at the Markets Field.

Speaking shortly after the announcement, Limerick Chairman Pat O’Sullivan revealed his delight at keeping Russell on.

“Martin’s teams always play an attractive style of football, and we look forward to assisting him in every way possible to ensure that Limerick FC makes a positive contribution to the Premier Division going forward.”

Russell, who is heading into his third full season as Limerick boss also expressed his delight after agreeing terms with the club’s hierarchy.

“I am happy to be playing my part in trying to progress Limerick FC, and to help establish the club as a real force in Ireland’s Premier Division. We have a real task on our hands, but I believe we can look forward to a season that sees the club continue to grow and work towards maximising its potential.”
