Keely expects more from his men

Shelbourne got back to winning ways with a 2-0 victory over Athlone Town on Friday night at Tolka Park. Dermot Keely’s men started the season in fantastic form, winning their opening five league games but back-to-back defeats against promotion rivals U.C.D and Sporting Fingal saw the Reds drop down to fourth in the table.

Two early second half goals from Anthony Flood and Derek Doyle were enough for Shels but despite the win Dermot Keely was upset with his side’s performance in the first half. “I shouldn’t have to go in at half time and say what I did. We were off the pace in the first half all together completely. We can’t be pulling rabbits out of the hat all the time."

The top of the first division is as tight as many punters expected it to be at the start of the season, as only three points separate the top four sides. Keely says that his team will have to improve if they are to end their exodus from the top flight of Irish football.

"When I look at that match, the three points are the most important thing but there is also a way of playing football. There is a minimum level of effort and commitment that’s required and they didn’t have it against Athlone."

Shelbourne travel to Ballybofey on Friday night to take on Finn Harps.
