McMillan wins July Player of the Month award

Dundalk FC striker David McMillan has won July’s SSE Airtricity/Soccer Writers’ Association of Ireland Player of the Month award.

The prolific attacker claimed the accolade ahead of second placed Greg Bolger (Cork City) and Peter Cherrie (Bray Wanderers), who finished in third position.

McMillan had a terrific July, firing eight goals including scoring back-to-back league hat-tricks versus Derry City and Longford Town respectively, before scoring a treble across their two-legged Champions League meeting with Icelandic side, FH Hafnarfjordur.

The Dublin based architect has continued his fine individual form into August by bagging a brace in the Lilywhites' incredible 3-0 hammering of BATE Borisov in Tallaght last week. The frontman now jointly leads the UEFA Champions League scoring charts, along with FC Copenhagen's Andreas Cornelius, for this season’s tournament with five goals.

Shortly after being presented with the award, the 27-year-old revealed that he has enjoyed a very satisfying few weeks leading the line for Stephen Kenny’s men.

McMillan said: “The award comes after a good month so I’m delighted to get it. I had two hat-tricks in the month so that was a bit of a once off too. Between the league and Europe, it’s been a good run for us and obviously it was topped off with an incredible night against BATE in Tallaght.”

Dundalk have been drawn against Polish champions Legia Warsaw in the Champions League play-off round, the home leg of which will be held at the Aviva Stadium.

Before that, though, the 2015 double winners travel to Bray Wanderers tomorrow evening in league action and they will be looking to atone for their disappointing single goal defeat to Galway United in Connacht last Friday night.

“We didn’t take our chances against Galway and that was disappointing. We’ll need to improve on that. Legia are a great side and we’re going to be massive underdogs. They’ve had some great results in Europe. But our squad is feeling fit and strong, the players feel good,” McMillan added.
