John Caulfield: 'We had enough chances to win three matches.'

Sligo Rovers secured a 2-1 victory away to Cork City in Turners Cross tonight and John Caulfield was disappointed with the result that has handed the initiative back to Dundalk.

City failed to capitalise on their game in hand, along with Galway United claiming three points from the league leaders on Friday.

“[We're] disappointed with the performance. [In] the second half we could have won three matches but obviously the first half the goals were absolutely criminal and you know you’re in a match where your attitude has to be right. We were doing okay and then passed them a goal.”

Sligo were the first to many of the balls during the opening 45 minutes and some uncharacteristic errors from the Cork City keeper and defence lead to the home side facing a tough second half.

“They are an energetic team and we possibly had one or two chances to get the equaliser. Then on the stroke of half time a comedy of errors to concede the second goal.

“However hard it is in Europe, it was hard to take tonight because it was a game that we didn’t deserve to be 2-0 down. We had opportunities to score and we didn’t.”

City have now failed to score more than one goal in a game since the end of May when they defeated Longford Town 3-0, and this is something that will concern John Caulfield with the Irish transfer market closed as of July 31^st.

“We created a lot of chances, even five or six chances within 10-12 yards, and we just couldn’t score. We had opportunities to get it out of the fire but we didn’t.”

Asked by Red FM’s Ruairi O’Hagan if there were any positives to be taken after a defeat like this, the manager responded:

“It’s difficult to get positives as the worry after Europe is that everybody must be focused, but it looked like some of the players weren’t at the races for the early parts of the first half.”

Dave Mulcahy made his first appearance for Cork City after signing from Bohemians last week, replacing the injured Alan Bennett who missed out with a back strain.

The manager is hopeful of the former Irish international being able to play this Friday night at home to Bohemians.

“It’s possible that he’ll be back, we’ll assess it tomorrow.”
