Sligo sign French striker Achille Campion
Sligo Rovers formally announced the signing of French striker Achille Campion over the weekend. The 26 year old striker became the Bit O'Reds second signing this week after ex-Finn Harps man Pat McCann signed for the club last Friday. Campion has signed a deal with Rovers until the end of the season.
He's already endeared himself to the Bit O'Red faithful by coming from the bench and scoring on his debut last Friday night against Wexford Youths.
The young Frenchman began his footballing career with USL Dunkerque where he spent 6 years and was captain of their U-18 side. After leaving France he moved to America where he enjoyed spells with the Belhaven Blazers, UC Santa Barbara Gauchos and Ventura County Fusion amongst others. In 2014 he signed for Swedish Division 1 club Norrby IF before moving on to English side Port Vale in 2015. Last season, he spent time with Torquay United on loan.
Speaking about the capture of Campion Rovers manager Dave Robertson told the Bit O'Red official website; “Achille has been playing in League One and joined up with the squad ahead of the Wexford Youths game. I've been aware of him for a few seasons and know his agent. He's been back in France training with one of his previous clubs so he's fit and ready to go. He really fits what we're looking for. He's quick, he's 6'2, and he will add a lot to us. He has a real edge about his game and he's a finisher.
“We've done our background on him and have spoken to a few people who know and have worked with Achille and they have spoken very, very highly of him both as a person and a player. He will boost our squad coming into the last few months of the season."
Rovers moved up to sixth in the table after the 5-0 win over Wexford Youths on Friday night and Rovers will be looking to put their opening day defeat to Shamrock Rovers behind when both teams meet this weekend in Tallaght stadium.
