Drogheda United sign Gareth McCaffrey

Drogheda United have today announced the signing of forward Gareth McCaffrey from Shamrock Rovers.

McCaffrey, who played underage football with Stella Marris and Shelbourne, signed for Scottish side Hibernian in 2013 and played for Hibs’ academy during his time there.

He then joined up with Shamrock Rovers at the beginning of 2015 for their pre-season campaign, making his debut in a 3-0 win away over Waterford United. McCaffrey went on to make 15 league appearances for the Hoops in 2015, scoring once, in a 1-1 draw against Bohemians. This season, McCaffrey has made just five league appearances, all as a substitute, but has failed to score.

On July 12th, he played in a friendly for Drogheda United against MK Dons, playing the full 90 minutes in a 3-1 defeat to Karl Robinson’s side. Drogs manager Pete Mahon has now added McCaffrey to his side as he looks to add goals to his promotion chasers. The 20 year old may make his debut against Athlone Town tomorrow night, should he be registered in time.
