Co. Tipperary chosen for Senior Team Training Camp
The Football Association of Ireland today announced that the senior international team will train in Co. Tipperary prior to this summer’s international friendly games in Thomond Park. Giovanni Trapattoni’s side will face Australia on August 12 and South Africa on September 8.
The games will be the first Irish based senior internationals to be played outside Dublin since 1985 and the first ever in the Mid-West. The Boys in Green, including local player Shane Long, will stay at Ballykisteen Hotel and will use the training facilities at St Michael’s Tipperary in preparation for both games.
Speaking today FAI Chief Executive, John Delaney said:
“Our August and September friendlies will bring the excitement of senior international football to Munster. As an Association, we are committed to growing our game outside its traditional heartlands and having the senior international team in Limerick and Tipperary will help us achieve that objective. As part of this programme we have consistently brought international fixtures and AGMs to counties like Mayo, Monaghan, Cork, Kerry and Offaly. Today’s inclusion of Limerick and Tipperary is a natural progression of that policy. I have no doubt that the arrival of Giovanni Trapattoni and his top players will generate a lot of interest.”
Welcoming the announcement South Tipperary County Manager Ned O’Connor said;
“We are delighted that Giovanni Trapattoni and the senior Republic of Ireland team will be coming to Tipperary. Tipperary is already well known for its sporting talents and hosting the senior Republic of Ireland squad will raise that profile even further. There is a great community spirit here and everybody has been working very hard to develop facilities. The FAI’s choice of Tipperary as a training venue is recognition of these developments. South Tipperary County Council and Tipperary Town Council have been working closely with the FAI and using football, through the appointment of a co-funded Development Officer, to promote social integration, particularly in RAPID areas. I have no doubt that everybody will give Giovanni Trapattoni and his players a very warm Tipperary welcome when they come here in August and September.”
