Heary Takes up Shels Manager Role
Shelbourne have announced that club legend Owen Heary will take over from Kevin Doherty as manager.
Heary played for Shelbourne for eight years between 1998 and 2006 and won five league titles and one FAI Cup with the Reds in what was a golden period for the Tolka Park outfit.
He has signed a deal until the end of the current campaign. “The appointment is initially until the end of the season, at which stage discussions will take place regarding its continuance into 2017,” a Shelbourne club statement confirmed.
Shels are currently sixth in the SSE Airtricity League First Division, having lost eight of their 14 League games this season.
The club accepted Doherty’s resignation with “deep regret” at the weekend, leaving 39-year-old Heary to take up his third managerial role since retiring as a player in 2013.
Heary made 238 appearances for Shelbourne as a player, scoring 13 goals. He also captained Shels rivals Bohemians to successive league titles in 2008 and 2009.
He was appointed caretaker manager of Bohs in 2013 and was manager of Sligo Rovers from September 2014 to April 2015.
