Byrne Sporting a Smile
Sporting Fingal’s Conan Byrne happily spoke with extratime.ie after last night's win over Shelbourne, and was delighted to get the three points. Sporting beat their local rivals 1-0, in doing so they closed the gap on league leaders UCD to just two points.
“We played well in the first half, they couldn’t live with our passing and we went from there,” said Byrne, who was named extratime.ie Man of the Match for his performance.
Byrne was happy with how his side began the match and felt the visitor’s tactics were no real surprise. “We had a good first half, I thought we played well - we kept the ball well. Then in the second half it was typical Shelbourne, just launching the ball forward.”
The win is Fingal’s fifth league win in a row - sixth in all competitions - and after a slow start to the campaign they have now pushed on up the table, with last night’s result leapfrogging them above Shels into second position.
“We tried to keep our width up front. We only got the one goal and I felt we should have got more - but we’re happy with the win. That’s five clean sheets in a row now which is great.”
Top of the table UCD were beaten by Wexford Youths in what many felt was a surprise result, but not Byrne. “It’s great with UCD losing too – I predicted that as well! Wexford are a young and enthusiastic side. They give you a good game.”
Sporting Fingal’s next five fixtures are Longford Town (a), Limerick FC (h), Mervue United (a), Athlone Town (h), Waterford United (h)
