The top two in the eircom League of Ireland First Division go head-to-head this weekend as Longford Town and Dundalk face-off at Flancare Park on Saturday evening (kick-off 7.30pm) in a crucial early season clash. The pair currently sit above both Shelbourne and Waterford United on goal difference, as the quartet have all accumulated four points from their opening two games.

With Shels and Waterford both away on Friday, to Monaghan and Athlone respectively, Saturday’s battle in the midlands is likely to take on an even greater significance by kick-off time. Longford added to their opening day hammering of Sporting Fingal by earning a hard fought point in the RSC last week, while Dundalk registered their first win of the campaign by comfortably passing the challenge of Monaghan at Oriel Park.

Team News: Longford Town defender Andy Bermingham may return to the squad here having sat out last week’s draw in Waterford through injury, however, the midlanders will definitely be without centre-half Ronan Frawley, who now serves a suspension carried-over from last year. Dundalk right-back John Flanagan must do likewise, while central defender Ben Whelehan (ankle) also misses out through injury. However, on a positive note, goalkeeper Chris Bennion and captain Aidan Lynch, who both missed the victory over Monaghan through one-match bans, will now re-enter John Gill’s plans.
