Reus left out of Germany Euro 2016 squad
Marco Reus has been omitted from the final 23-man Germany squad for EURO 2016 having failed to shake off a groin injury.
The Borussia Dortmund star, who is also celebrating his 27th birthday, will be bitterly disappointed having missed out on Germany’s World Cup win in Brazil two years ago due to injury.
A dissapointed Joachim Low said, “Our medical department doubts that he could stand up to a demanding tournament like this. It is a disappointment for him and for all of us. If fit, he would have been a major plus for our team.”
Having made the initial 27-man squad, Karim Bellarabi, Sebastian Rudy and Julian Brandt have also failed to make the cut, with Low adding: “It is not a decision which is against these four players, but rather one that is for the 23 others.”
There is, however, room for veterans Lukas Podolski and Bastian Schweinsteiger. Low will be hoping they can bring their experience to the youth amongst the sqaud with the likes of Dortmund’s Julian Weigl and Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich making the final 23.
Germany will be hoping to get their preparations back on track in their final warm-up game against Hungary on Saturday after a disappointing 3-1 loss at home to Slovakia last Sunday.
