Germany name provisional squad for Euro 2016

Joachim Low has announced Germany’s provisional 27-man squad for EURO 2016 in France this summer.

Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has been included in the provisional squad despite not having played a game for his club since a knee injury picked up in March.

The veteran midfielder will be hoping to add to his 13 appearances at the European Championship, which will make him the countries most capped player in the tournaments history. Philipp Lahm currently holds the record at 14 appearances.

The reigning World Cup winners have included Liverpool’s Emre Can, as well as Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil in the squad, which is heavy on attacking midfielders with the likes of Real Madrid’s Toni Kroos and Bayern Munich’s Mario Gotze looking forward to an exciting summer in France.

Having missed out on the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Borussia Dortmund’s Marco Reus is also in the squad along with his uncapped Dortmund teammate Julian Weigl.

There are two other uncapped players included as Julian Brandt of Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich have both received their first international call ups.

Speaking from the French Embassy in Berlin, Low said while insisting on unity being the key to Germany’s success, “the collective is more important than every single individual player ... We know we are strong but not invincible, so we have to work during our training camp.”

Germany are in Group C for EURO 2016 and are in Lille to face Ukraine following a trip the Stade de France for a tie with Poland before their final group match against Northern Ireland in the Parc des Princes.
