Kildare County -v- Mervue United
Mervue Utd travel to Station Road this Friday night to take on a Kildare County side that sit bottom of the table with just one point. Mervue will have good memories of their last visit to Kildare as a 3-0 win ensured their passage to League of Ireland football in last season relegation/promotion play-off. Kildare earned a reprieve from demotion from senior soccer after the FAI demoted Cobh Ramblers from the League of Ireland.
Having lost out to another late goal against Shelbourne at home last weekend Johnny Glynn’s side will be hoping to bounce back against a side that has shipped twelve goals in their last two games having lost 8-0 to Sporting Fingal and 4-0 to table toppers UCD. Although Thomas Donnelly’s Kildare side will be looking to restore some pride to their club with the visit of a club also in the bottom half of the table.
Glynn will select from virtually the same panel that performed so well against Shelbourne but top scorer David Goldbey will be out of action for up to three weeks after he had to retire with an ankle injury last weekend. Keeper Ryan Griffin (finger) is a doubt, which should see Eoin Martin, continue to deputise after his man of the match display against Shels. Nigel Keady (knee) and Noel McDonnell (groin) are still out injured. Nicky Curran (hamstring) should be okay having gone off injured late in the second half last weekend and Ollie Keogh could also return to the squad.
Kildare will definitely be without captain Paddy Mahon after he was stretchered off late in last weekend’s game against UCD with a bad ankle injury and will be out off action for up to two months. John Flynn and David O’Connell are also out through injury. Kildare have had to contend with a lot of injuries this season with Donnelly having had to use 25 players in their five games to date.
Glynn is looking to put a run of result together and acknowledges that Friday nights game is a ”huge game for his side and that it is going to be a huge battle and they will have to have their heads right. We are boosting our confidence, we’re improving our play, but if we don’t battle we’ll be in a lot of trouble, so that will be the key for us”
Kick-off at Station Road is 7.30 p.m. for a key game for both sides in the bottom three in the First Division with precious points at stake.
