Edgar Davids reflects on a glittering career

As a player, Edgar Davids was one of the most recognisable footballers in the the game with his famed glasses. The hard-tacking midfielder started his career with Ajax youths joining in 1985. He progressed to the senior squad and at the age of 18 made his debut.

During his time with the Amsterdam outfit Davids won three Dutch league titles, the UEFA Cup (1992), the UEFA Champions League (1995) and was a UEFA Champions League runner-up the following year.

In summer 1996 he left Holland to go to Italy, first with AC Milan before transferring to Juventus in 1997. It was while with the Old Lady more success followed.

During a seven-year stint he helped Juventus to three Serie A titles and played in the famous Champions League semi-final when Roy Keane played what many consider the Cork man's best game in a Manchester United jersey.

A loan spell with Barcelona in 2004 reunited Davids with Frank Rijkaard, who was the Catalan manager at the time. Davids advanced to line out for Inter Milan, Tottenham Hotspur, Crystal Palace and English lower league outfit Barnet, where he was player-coach from 2012–14 before hanging up his boots at the age of 40.

After such an illustrious career he found it hard to select a favourite stadium he had the pleasure of playing on.

"It depends on so many occasions so I can't pick one,” he told Extratime.ie.

“I was just impressed with one game at the end of the season when I was in the Azteca Stadium in Mexico. That was quite incredible when you are a youngster.”

Regarding a notable match he played in, he said: "On top of my head I don't have one, I just love the game. When I was playing I might have had one but now not really.”

A number of years ago Davids played an exhibition match in Auckland, New Zealand against David Beckham's LA Galaxy (which I attended). I reminded him of this game in Oceania and mid-sentence Davids said:

"Can I tell you something? Sorry to interrupt you, but I love your city." I told him I'm from Dublin but just lived in Auckland, and the Dutch Legend continued:

"I love that city, unbelievable, I got invited to play through my management and I was like, you know what, I was in LA and it was around the corner, so let's go.

“We had a great time, saw the city and I love the New Zealand culture," a smiling and happy Edgar Davids concluded.

Nowadays Davids is involved with Monta, a brand that, according to its website, merges his love of football, art and fashion.

"I set up my own brand which is called Monta, It's my day to day job," he stated to the media.

Edgar Davids was in Dublin to promote the International Champions Cup game between FC Barcelona and Celtic FC that will be taking place at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday July 30th, 2016.
