EA Sports Cup Report: Bohemians 3 - 1 Longford Town
Bohemians booked their place in the Second Round of the EA Sports Cup following a convincing 3-1 win over Longford Town at Dalymount Park.
An early Peter McGlynn own goal put Bohs ahead with barely two minutes on the clock as he headed home a Lorcan Fitzgerald free kick from the right wing.
Straight from the kick-off Longford scored an equaliser. David O'Sullivan found himself free down the right and hit an unstoppable shot into the back of Dean Delany's net.
Kevin O'Connor hit the crossbar but the ball bounced the wrong side of the line for him to finish off a very fast paced opening ten minutes.
Although the remainder of the first half was played end to end neither team created a stonewall chance. Possibly the best chance of the remainder of the opening half fell to Keith Buckley, but he failed to make contact in a goalscoring position.
At the start of the second half Bohemians won a free kick on the left wing. Derek Prendergast made some space for himself in front of all of the defenders. His header to the back post was as perfect as Fitzgerald's delivery.
Less than five minutes later Jake Kelly doubled their lead as he bundled the ball over Ian Molloy's line following a corner from the left hand side.
The home side had some good chances over the next few minutes, with both Ben Mohamed and Adam Evans hitting their shots too close to Molloy in the Town goal.
At the other end of the pitch Longford had a couple of half chances, but Kaleem Simon and Karl Chambers' efforts were too high.
There were few real chances in the last few minutes of the game. Pat Flynn's dismissal for a second yellow card was the home fans' only excuse to cheer.
Bohemians will now join Athlone Town, Shamrock Rovers and Shelbourne in the Pool 4 draw for the second round of matches in the EA Sports Cup. Shelbourne beat Cabinteely 5-0 at Tolka Park last night while the other two teams received a bye into the second round.
Bohemians have now knocked out Longford for the third season in a row at Dalymount. In 2014 the Gypsies won 2-0 and last season they beat the visitors 3-1, on that occasion Ben Mohamed scored for Town.
