Keely relieved by Doherty intervention
Shelbourne dramatically plundered all three points from a lively encounter with Mervue United on Friday night, as a game that should have been decided in the Dubliner's favour by half time ended up needing the forehead of central defender Kevin Doherty to push them past the winning post late on.
Speaking to extratime.ie afterwards, Shels manager Dermot Keely admitted that he had thought a point was all his side would gain from the game as time ticked away. "I thought it was going to end a draw," he said. "We should have been three up by half time and then we started shooting from silly positions and not passing the ball as we should have been.
"[Mervue] were game and they gave it a right go and caused us problems at times." Keely stated that a lack of goals from his team was a major worry for him as he felt they "would not be able to continue winning games only scoring one goal."
He also admitted that UCD's strong start to the season had caught him by surprise as he had expected the title chase to be exclusively between Sporting Fingal and his own side. On the basis of Friday's efforts, Shels will have to dramatically improve their chance-conversion rate if they are to push for the sole automatic promotion spot.
