Gearoid Morrissey returns to Ireland and signs back with City
Gearóid Morrissey is making his return to Leeside. Cork City FC have today announced that the 24 year old has signed for the club on a two year deal.
He was a fans favorite during his first spell with City, putting in a string of impressive displays. He was key in City's First Division title winning campaign in 2011 under Tommy Dunne, while he continued to perform consistently well under John Caulfield in the Premier Division.
Morrissey left to join Cambridge United in December 2014, making his debut in Old Trafford against Manchester United, after coming on as a sub in the FA Cup tie earlier this year.
However, he has found game time limited overall during his time with Cambridge and that was a key factor in his decision to return to Cork.
Talking about his return to City, Morrissey said that he cannot wait to get down to business.
“I’m really happy to be back. I just want to crack on now and get back to playing, which is what I love to do. The fact that the squad is getting stronger was one of the key factors in me signing; we are looking to win some silverware next season.”
“I kept up to date with the team last season, but I didn’t see many games. We all want to go one better than last season. I would rather just focus on pre-season and take it game by game; I don’t want to be getting carried away, but we definitely have an eye on silverware.”
He is sure to play a crucial role in John Caulfield's plans for the 2016 season, as the City manager continues to assemble a squad that he hopes will finally overtake Dundalk and become Premier Division champions.
