Ireland’s chances of getting a good result against the World Champions Italy on Wednesday were given a boost this morning with the news that Aiden McGeady resumed light training this morning. There were some doubts over the fitness of the Celtic winger after he suffered a blow to his right knee in Saturday’s one-one draw against Bulgaria.

Giovanni Trapatonni said that the winger didn’t join in the full training session at Gannon Park this morning but that he was able to do some light work ahead of Wednesday’s game in Bari. Manchester City duo Shay Given and Richard Dunne along with striker Robbie Keane were also missing, although all three were rested as a precaution and are expected to be available at the San Nicola Stadium.

Ireland currently lie second in group eight two and are points behind Marcello Lippi’s side.
