Winn-ing mentality gets Conor new deal

Goalkeeper Conor Winn has signed a new contract with Galway United until the end of the 2016 season.

Conor joined Galway from First Division club Finn Harps before the start of the season and speaking to galwayunitedfc.ie, he felt he wasn’t at full fitness when he arrived at the club

“I came back unfit last season, I had to work my socks off to get back into the team. To be fair to Connor Gleeson, Ger Hanley and Kevin Horgan, we were pushing each other all the way. Even when I got sent off against St Pats, it took me a while to get my jersey back. There is serious competition at the club and I expect that to continue next season”

This can be seen with the fact that in the first fifteen games of the season, Conor only played three times but after that, he only missed three games for the rest of the season and was voted Galway United’s Player of the Month for August.

On signing the deal, the twenty-three year old said that while there was competition, he was determined to keep his place in the team and was “hoping to hold onto the jersey for next year.”

Tommy Dunne spoke too about how Conor had to bide his time for a chance and he was delighted that he took the chance when it came.

“Conor was one of our most consistent performers towards the end of the season,” remarked the current Galway boss.

The former Cork City manager feels that Winn has “put a lot of work in with Mark Cobey (Goalkeeping coach) and he’s made huge improvements as the season has progressed,” and that, “He’s done very well and we hope he continues in the same vein in 2016.”
