WNL Report: Peamount United 1 - 2 Galway WFC
In a hard fought battle at Greenogue on Saturday evening, Galway WFC earned only their second league victory over Dublin opposition when they defeated Peamount United by two goals to one.
A third meeting between the sides in as many weeks saw both sides settle into their stride early on and Amber Barrett had the game's first effort, but her snapshot failed to test Tina Hughes in the Galway goal.
Like the two previous meetings, spectators in Greenogue didn’t have to wait long for the game's opening goal after Michelle Watson failed to gather a Galway corner before Jenny Byrne headed home from close range.
Despite falling behind, Peamount almost hit back instantly when Clare Kinsella’s headed effort appeared to be heading for the top corner, but Hughes got an outstretched hand to deny the Peas skipper.
Barrett was the next Peamount player to have an effort on goal, she raced onto a Roma McLaughlin throw ball and after beating the defender to the ball her shot from the edge of the box sailed over the visiting goal.
With the home side having a great spell of possession, Aislinn Meaney had an effort for the visiting side after she raced onto a ball from Meabh De Burca, but like Barrett before her she failed to find the target.
Moments later Shauna Fox should have doubled her side’s advantage when she was found unmarked in the Peamount penalty area from Lynsey McKey delivery, but the right-back failed to hit the target
After Fox’s effort, Peamount had several quick opportunities, first Barrett fired wide from an acute angle. Aoife Moloney was next to try her luck from distance, but her effort was gathered by Hughes at the second opportunity.
With half-time fast approaching, Peamount grabbed an equaliser after Barrett counter attacked from a McKey free-kick which was easily cleared, the forward raced towards goal from her own half before cutting in from left edge of the Galway box before her low right footed effort went under Hughes body.
Soon after the side’s emerged from the break, Galway restored their lead after several half opportunities in the Peamount box before the ball fell to Lisa Casserly who fired low past Watson in the home goal.
Despite falling behind for a second time, Peamount had an opportunity to hit back instantly, so great interchange play between Kinsella and Barrett, but Kinsella’s shot took a deflection and fell into the Galway keeper's hands.
Savannah McCarthy, moments later should have doubled her side’s lead, but the Kerry natives free header at the back post sailed wide of Watson’s goal.
As Galway continued to press for a third goal, Watson was forced into a brilliant save from a lovely strike from Caroline Carter. Peamount, a minute later will feel they should have equalised, but Louise Corrigan headed wide from close range.
Watson, was again called into action soon after Corrigan’s miss, the goalkeeper this time denying McKey whose long range shot appeared to be heading toward the top corner. With her keeper in fantastic form, Sarah McKevitt will feel she should have done better for her side after she dispossessed the Galway defence from a short goal kick, but her effort failed to test Hughes.
However, soon after Hughes was called into action twice late on. First she denied Emma Byrne with a low save before she got down low to deny McKevitt from a free-kick.
