Women’s National League Shield Group A round-up

Wexford Youths 5-0 Cork City Women

Wexford Youths continued their dominant start to the season when booking a place in the Women’s National League Shield final on Sunday afternoon at Ferrycarrig Park.

Kylie Murphy got the hosts off to a dream start when the Youths skipper opened the scoring inside sixty seconds after she converted her fourth goal in three games.

As Youths continued to press forward, Carol Breen doubled her side's lead with less than ten minutes on the clock, while Emma Hansberry the star of the show in last week's FAI Cup victory was next to add her name to the score sheet when her long range free-kick sailed into the Cork goal.

Shauna Wall added a fourth for her side just before half-time when her sliced cross beat Chelsea Noonan in the Cork goal. With little over an hour played, Youths added the gloss to an impressive victory when Carol Breen slotted home her second goal of the game from close range.

Kilkenny United WFC 1-6 UCD Waves

UCD Waves bounced back to winning ways after their FAI Cup exit last weekend when they travelled to Buckley Park on Sunday afternoon. Eileen Gleeson’s side opened the scoring through Julie-Ann Russell, before Aine O’Gorman doubled her side’s lead soon after.

Despite falling two goals behind, Kilkenny showed their fighting courage and pulled a goal back when Jenny O'Keeffe fired past Monica McGuirk for the southeast club's first goal in senior football.

As the half-time whistle approached, UCD extended their lead again when O’Gorman grabbed her second of the game to send the Waves into the break leading by three goals to one.

After four first-half goals in Buckley Park, fans of both Kilkenny and UCD were forced to wait thirty-three second-half minutes before Orlagh Nolan fired home for Waves. With the game now well beyond the hosts, Waves added two late goals first Ciara Grant got her name on the score sheet before in the dying minutes O’Gorman completed her hat-trick.
