Wallace – Expect a Top Half Finish

With only three games played in the First Division it's Wexford Youths that are currently bottom of the league. The table, however, doesn’t tell the whole story as the opening three games couldn’t have come any harder for Mick Wallace’s side. Youths have already played the three teams who are favourites for promotion; Waterford, Shelbourne and Sporting Fingal.

Reflecting on Friday night’s two-nil away defeat to Sporting Fingal, Wallace said that Liam Buckley’s men are the best of the promotion candidates he has seen so far. “I thought we played well but Fingal are a good side and they moved the ball well very quickly. We have played Shelbourne, Waterford and Fingal now and I do think that Fingal are the best of the teams we have played,” he said.

Wexford are yet to pick up a point this season but Wallace believes that his side aren’t far off from competing with the leagues big three. “To be honest when we play Shels, Waterford and Fingal the next time around we will take some points of them. I can guarantee you that,” Wallace said.

It’s not all doom and gloom at Ferrycarrig Park as the manager believes that his side will improve as soon as key players return from injury He said: “We are very short of strikers at the moment, we have five injured strikers. So there are a lot of players to come back. We also have some powerful U-18s that are being kept back for the Intermediate youth semi-final on Sunday week and they will gradually come into contention over the next few weeks.”

Wallace, who guided the club to a seventh placed finish last year, is expecting his side to finish higher this season. “We want to finish a little higher this year. We will be hoping to finish in the top half and even though we have no points from the first three games I am still very confident that we will finish in the top half,” he said.
