Super sub Dennehy delighted with goal

For long parts of July many people speculated online and through all the other various media channels that the likelihood of seeing Billy Dennehy in a City shirt under John Caulfield would have been regarded nigh impossible.

However since a clear the air meeting a few weeks back as Caulfield said “We had a chat between the two of us and now everything is fine”, the Tralee native has found his way back into the squad helped by an injury crisis and he is making the most of his second chance netting twice in two games especially scoring Friday’s winner against Galway United only four minutes after coming on as a second half substitute for Liam Miller.

“In my own heart of hearts I always wanted to play for City, I never stated otherwise to anybody. There are people I spoke to over the period and I kind of always wanted to stay at City and play here.”

The Kerry native was thrilled with the goal but he kept repeating how important the team was and again this shows that the Kerry man is willing to leave behind his recent 50 day absence from the team in order to push forward and help City as they approach the business end of the season scoring against Pat’s and Galway to give him 12 goals this season.

“Delighted to be back on the pitch helping the team and to get another goal tonight was nice. The three points help to keep the pressure on a bit.

“On the Pat’s game I was coming on bit rusty for the first few minutes and then after that it’s like you have never been away and I’m delighted to be back.

“It meant an awful lot when you are not really sure what’s going and then you don’t know what reception you will get from people. But the reception I got coming on against Pat’s gave me a massive boost and again tonight I want to repay the people. Thankfully tonight I was able to help us get the win.”

He admitted it was difficult not being involved with the team during the 50 days as the emotion was now coming through in his voice as he spoke to the assembled press including Extratime.ie.

“It was very difficult and heartbreaking at times as it was out of my control. It was just a matter of keeping the head down and yes there was a lot of offers and teams came in for me but I never said I wanted to leave and it was just a matter of keeping the head down and staying fit ready for whenever the team needed me.”

On his return to playing manager John Caulfield has said that Dennehy needs to work on his fitness and this is acknowledged by Dennehy.

“Yes I working very hard on my own, playing matches is different and any of the lads who have been away for a while injured will tell you that games are way different to training.”

Dennehy realises how close he was to possibly leaving City and as a result he is excited about the future having been given a second chance mentioning the fact that he had some great years up in Tallaght with Shamrock Rovers but listening to him speak it is clear that he sees his future on Leeside as he wants to be a part of any success that may come their way.

“My couple of years away with Rovers were brilliant and we’d some massive nights and well I’d love to have that here. It would be unbelievable to have those experiences here at this club and it would bring the club to a whole new other level and hopefully that will be in the future.”
