Cork City WFC announce the signings of Megan O’Keeffe and Rebecca Walsh

On Friday afternoon, Cork City Women announced their tenth and eleventh summer signings with the news that both Megan O’Keeffe and Rebecca Walsh had joined ahead of the 2015-16 Women’s National League.

O’Keeffe joins the Leeside club from Douglas Hall, after the striker impressed in recent seasons – in 2013 she helped the Cork side to claim glory in the FAI Intermediate Cup, before losing out to Ballina twelve months later.

After signing for City, O’Keeffe told Corkcitywomensfc.com that she couldn’t wait to get started and work alongside the new management, which contains some familiar faces.

“I’m really looking forward to working with Niall and his team for the upcoming year – there’s a great atmosphere here at City this season. It’s been a great help to have some other Douglas players like Chelsea and Stacey already in the squad, while Eileen Ring has joined the coaching team. We really hope to go out and achieve this season.”

Walsh a Tipperary native who is now based in Cork has joined from Tipperary Town Ladies and the centre half is now looking forward to testing herself against some of the country's best players having spent a considerable period of time on the treatment table in recent seasons.

“I was out with injury for a little while and was driven mad trying to get back to full fitness! However, it’s brilliant to be back playing fully in the last year or two and I’m hoping to go on to achieve with this Cork City team this year. I feel very privileged to play with such a high standard of players here and the professionalism and commitment of the management is second to none. I am looking forward to the season ahead and getting stuck in.”

A delighted Niall O’Regan told the club’s website that the players will bring a mix of youth and experience, and it’s great that the club is able to attract talented players from the whole of Munster and not just Cork.

“We’re delighted to sign Megan this season. We know her quality from her time at both Crosshaven and at Douglas Hall - she’s a quality finisher, but she adds a lot more than just goals up front. The squad is really coming together for the season and we can’t wait to unveil more and start playing games this season.

“Rebecca is one of the players that will bring huge experience in the game to the squad, having recently turned 30, Rebecca has been playing at a good senior level for many years now and this is really important to us to strike the right balance of youth and experienced players.

“We need to make sure those experienced players have the right approach to the younger players, helping them, giving them constructive feedback and always looking out for them, and along with her playing ability, Rebecca has these skills in abundance. We are delighted to have Rebecca sign for us and it’s great that we are not only attracting the top players in Cork but also around Munster.”
